Performance artist Ryan McNamara—who recently completed five months of public dance lessons for a project called Make Ryan a Dancer—took the weekend off to act as instructor. McNamara and 11 dancers, in costumes designed by Robert Geller, taught museum-goers everything from strip dance to traditional Korean moves. “We created this McNamara/Geller carnival of dancers, with Ryan as this kind of crazy Andy Warhol carnie directing the whole thing,” Geller said. “Sometimes art and fashion can be too serious. This was meant to be fun, and even a little funny.”

Men’s wear designer Robert Geller, meanwhile, will be creating costumes for Ryan McNamara and the scores of dance instructors who will be teaching him (and willing audience members) how to soft-shoe, plié, and, yes, strip dance. “I’m doing a very old-school French boudoir-type of outfit for that one,” remarks Geller.

Menswear maestro Robert Geller teamed with performance artist Ryan McNamara on public dance lessons, for which Geller designed the clothes. Grinning with excitement, Geller told StyleList, "We had a very quick bond." He then went on "speed dates" with dancers to prepare the costumes, ending up with oversize shorts and pants to accommodate shimmying and stretching. The experience might shape a future collection. "That kind of exaggeration is very powerful.... It broke some barriers," he cheered.
